Music art performance couple days before the russian invasion in Ukraine
February 2022, Kyiv, Ukraine
Contemporaty art by Sofiia Holubeva
Music and performance by Valentyn Paly
The project took place in the apartment of musician Valentine Panasiuk and artist Sofia Golubeva on February 19, 2022. It was 5 days before Russian aggression started against Ukraine. Artists reflected on the topic, focusing on the present, appealing to the philosophy of stoicism.
The main questions that artists ask themselves are: How not to blame yourself for mistakes in the past and not suffer because of possible failures in the future. The video broadcasting on the wall is a recording of the process, where the artist redraws an old work in an attempt to fix it. In parallel with the process of endless “correction”, the artist superimposes phrases related to the experience of the future: Where should I go: Uzhgorod or Odesa? What if someone says that my work isn't good enough? Should I move to Germany? What if my work is not appreciated? The record is stuck. This fact gives a mood of anxiety.
The feeling of returning again and again to questions about the past or future, but without solving them.
Valentyn improvises in front of the balcony. The present moment exists outside the window: the sounds of cars, the conversations of people. The musician used in his improvisation all these sounds, which were live-monitored and recording. Sofia documented the project and Valentyn improvised on the guitar. It was a kind of meditative process which allowed them to relieve anxiety in the pre-war period.
